Types of Custom Home Windows

A house’s windows can define its character. From the outside, they are defining architectural details that enhance curb appeal and tie the home’s disparate elements together. Inside, they are both beautiful and functional, providing both light and views while also integrating into the home’s HVAC design. When you’re building or buying a custom home, it pays to understand these crucial building elements. Here are some of the most popular types.

Double-Hung

Two glass panels at the top and bottom that slide open and closed…if that sounds familiar to you, it’s because double-hung windows are the dominant style in most homes. Their simple design and low cost make them a logical choice. However, the opening can be large, presenting problems where safety is a concern.

Slider

Slider windows are essentially double-hungs, but horizontal. This makes them noticeably easier to open, ideal for highly functional rooms like bathrooms or kitchens. This style can appear dated, though, and the tracks can easily clog with dirt.

Awning

Awning windows are hinged at the top and use a crank to open, creating open space only on the bottom. This is ideal for rainy weather since it blocks falling water while allowing air in the bottom. However, awning openings are small, so ventilation is weak. The crank mechanism is also a common point of failure.

Fixed Windows

For a stunning great room or master bedroom, a large fixed window is hard to beat. Permanently installed with no opening, these glass monoliths are striking and – due to their permanent nature – well-sealed. Their aesthetic appeal comes at a price: the large glass surface can cause heating and cooling problems. If you want the view, be ready to pay for it in your power bill.

Bay Windows

By protruding from a building’s façade in a sort of cubby, bay windows are striking from the street and bring lots of natural light to interiors. They create natural shelves that function as decorative or even sitting areas, producing an elevated, stately look for any home. However, their unique nature requires careful construction and a lot of expensive labor.
