Your countertops are one of the most important surfaces in your kitchen. Whether you’re a seasoned home chef or your cooking experience is mostly the microwave, you need a countertop that meets your specific needs. Counters are also a great way to improve the aesthetics of your kitchen.

When you’re building a custom home, you have a lot of choices! Today we’re sharing some of the most popular countertop materials. This list is by no means comprehensive; speak with your builder to learn about other options.

Laminate

Arguably the most popular type of countertop, laminates feature a particle board core with layers of plastic laminate layered on top of it. While laminate countertops are definitely a budget choice, they’re also very easy to maintain, and the huge variety of colors means they fit into virtually any décor.

Granite

Considered highly desirable by many homeowners, granite countertops are beautiful and highly valued. They’re made from natural stone cut to size and sealed with a clear layer. That luxurious look comes with a price: granite countertops are very expensive, and they require special care. You should only clean them with cleaners approved for granite, and failing to reseal them regularly can leave permanent stains in the stone.

Quartz

A nice hybrid between the look of granite and the ease of use of laminate, quartz countertops use a mixture of quartz and binders to produce a natural stone look at a slightly reduced cost. Because they’re manufactured, more colors are also available. With that said, they are less heat resistant than granite countertops, and long-term sun exposure can damage them.

Butcher Block

Imagine your favorite cutting board, but make it your whole countertop. That’s the appeal behind butcher block: natural wood surfaces with a warm look that are excellent for food prep. They’re also durable, and can be resanded and refinished to match remodels. That said, like cutting boards they require careful care and frequent resealing to avoid warping.

Stainless Steel

Steel is the surface of choice for professional countertops for a reason: it’s extremely durable, easy to clean, and naturally sanitary. Home cooks will appreciate it for the same reasons, and the aesthetic of stainless steel works well in both a contemporary setting or as a contrast to natural stone and wood. The primary drawback is cost: stainless steel counters can run upwards of $80 per square foot.
